‘Rocky Bottoms’ seafood restaurant – West Runton, Norfolk

Date of visit : Numerous, the latest in November 2019…

A glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and a warming lunch..

This is one of our favourite North Norfolk haunts. Situated between the villages of East & West Runton, not far from either Sheringham or Cromer, and perfectly placed on the cliffs overlooking the sea, it’s a wonderful little gem of a place that’s not to be missed! It’s really well known in the local area, and has even been featured on the BBC Two programme Nadiya’s British food adventure with Nadiya Hussein. We heard through the grapevine too recently, that some very popular Royal visitors frequented the establishment in the summer, but we didn’t see them first hand..maybe next time!

View across the clifftop to the sea

Run by lovely husband and wife team Richard & Alison, and their daughter Pollyanna, Rocky Bottoms is a fantastic little restaurant showcasing the best of North Norfolk Seafood, including freshly caught lobsters & the famous Cromer crab. Richard brings the catch in himself on his boat ‘Anna-Gail’, and you really can’t eat seafood any fresher. Featuring a varied menu, including dishes for non-seafood eaters, and of course a selection for the little ones, there’s something for everyone. Housed in an old brick kiln building from the 1800’s, which has been lovingly and carefully restored, the restaurant is full of character and exudes a wonderful atmosphere.

Sympathetically restored 1800’s brick kiln

We enjoyed a quick lunch recently on a cold wet November day, which felt very strange, as we usually visit in the summer after walking along the coastal path and sit outside in our shorts & t-shirts! The restaurant was cosy and warm, and the view out across the cliffs was very dramatic, with dark skies and choppy seas. We opted for the smoked haddock chowder, and some home-made chips, and it was really delicious and warming. We usually visit on summer evenings and plump for the fresh lobster salad, which is heaven on a plate. We don’t care what anyone says, you just can’t beat North Sea lobster fresh off the boat in morning, and served up the same afternoon, tender, sweet, succulent and delectable.

Part of the dining room in the old brick kiln itself, very atmospheric

Rocky bottoms are closing shortly for the winter, but will be back next year. You can follow them on Instagram and Facebook, and they have a website for the latest info etc. If you are ever in sunny Norfolk and are looking for an authentic shellfish and seafood experience, then pay Rocky Bottoms a visit, it’s truly wonderful food and you always receive fantastic service with a smile 🙂
