Cruise Port visit – Antigua
Date of visit : November 2019
Ship : Seabourn Odyssey
Having been to Antigua before, we decided on this occasion to spend the day on the beach at Dickenson Bay. On previous visits to the island we have visited Shirley Heights viewing point, and the English Harbour with its beautiful historical buildings, both of which are a must visit when on the island.
After negotiating with a local taxi, we travelled the short distance to Dickenson Bay, journey time approximately 10-15 minutes and $8usd each. Dickenson Bay boasts a fantastic stretch of white sand and warm blue seas. There are a few hotels in the vicinity, including the Sandals Resort, but there is a large section of the beach allocated to day trippers with sunbeds and umbrellas to hire. Two sunbeds and an umbrella will set you back $20usd. You can buy drinks and food from the helpful guys on the beach, and there is also a novel floating bar just offshore with a free speedboat shuttle to it. It looked pretty busy with revellers enjoying the local rum punch, so we decided to stick to our spot on the beach and dip in and out of the fabulous water.
On arrival back at the port we wandered around the extensive cruise port area with its abundant collection of shops. Christina made straight for ‘GingerLily & Sunseakers’ boutique with its incredible array of swimwear, including big names such as Billabong and Lulu Fama. We met the owner of the shop this time, Niki, who was really friendly and helpful, and gave us some great tips on where to visit next time we are on the island. If you’re in Antigua port, and are looking for quality beachwear, then pay them a visit, they have a fantastic selection. The port area also boasts numerous bars offering free wifi, and of course duty free shops including upmarket jewellery stores.
Antigua is a beautiful island with 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. If you book a Caribbean cruise you will most probably stop here as the island has everything in abundance, sightseeing, fabulous beaches, warm clear seas, friendly people and amazing views.
