Six Senses Soneva Kiri – Koh Kood Island, Thailand
Date of visit : March 2012… but we are revisiting Koh Kood in 2020!
We visited this spectacular resort back in 2012, and we feel compelled to write a very backdated review on it as it was simply spectacular. Of all the hotels we’ve stayed in in the World, this place had such an impact on us. I imagine little has changed since our visit, apart from the prices being increased! Koh Kood Island in the Gulf of Thailand is a very special place to us, and one of the most beautiful locations in the World.
We knew we were in for a very special experience on arrival at Bangkok airport, after being whisked off our Etihad flight by a hotel representative and straight through the airport to the Soneva Kiri private aircraft. A small Cessna type plane, it seated approximately 8 people and it was used solely for transferring privileged guests to and from the resort. The journey was amazing with incredible views down to the Gulf of Thailand below dotted with small tropical Islands.
The luxury kept coming! Touching down on the small island landing strip opposite the resort, we were greeted like film stars and quickly ushered to the waiting private launch to take us the few minutes across the bay to Koh Kood itself. There we were put in little golf buggies and transferred directly to our incredible pool villas for in room check in. The golf buggies incidentally were ours for the duration of our stay, and we could use them to whiz around the resort at our leisure! Ami our host met us at the villa and explained the layout of the resort, that he was on call 24 hours a day by mobile phone, which he subsequently presented to us, and that our every wish was his command! I mean this was truly 5* luxury, and everything had been thought of, and I mean everything!
The pool villas were oversized and wonderful, with large private swimming pools which weren’t overlooked, views down to the sea, huge comfortable beds, outside sunken tubs, and separate dressing rooms and eco-style bathrooms. Room service could be ordered whenever you wished, and we had our own dining gazebo in our garden overlooking the pool. Truly magical.
The resort was fairly spread out due to the size and number of villas there, hence the need for the golf buggies. It was such good fun though driving around the resort and stopping off at various points. The dining was sensational and varied. Khun Benz restaurant on the river was one of the best Thai meals we’ve ever experienced, and we still talk about it to this day. The Tree-pod dining was really good fun, and we were literally hoisted up into the canopy of the trees to watch the sunset, while being served by waiters on zip lines! Surreal and serene. One evening we were driving back from dinner when we happened upon the open air cinema. We decided to park up, and we joined a couple of other moviegoers laying on sumptuous mattresses with blankets and pillows, popcorn, drinks, and a sky laden with glittering stars. It was Titanic showing that night, and the whole ambiance made the film magical. A night we will never forget.
The Six Senses Spa at the hotel was second to none, and Christina compares every massage she has during our jaunts around the World to the massages she experienced at Koh Kood, they really were that good. Located in a peaceful and serene setting with a relaxing and calm ambiance, the spa offered a huge choice of different luxurious treatments, most definitely the perfect way to unwind from the stresses of everyday life.
The beach at the hotel was sublime and so very quiet and relaxing. Many of the clients spent their days in their private villas so didn’t venture down there, so we literally felt as though we had it to ourselves. Thick mattresses, heaps of soft towels, a drinks hut, service that was second to none, and of course crystal clear warm seas and a white gently shelving sandy beach, what more could one want on holiday? Pure paradise!
We have such fond memories of this hotel and of course of Koh Kood itself. We are visiting the Island again in 2020, so will review a new pool villa property that we are going to visit, and hope that it’s as good as Soneva Kiri. We think this is one of the most amazing destinations in Thailand, the seas are perfect and the beaches are sensational, if you get a chance to go then don’t hesitate, it’s wonderful.
